Connecting Research, Innovation, and Industry: Reflections from CNDE, IIT Madras

Reading Time: 3 minutes

One of the most critical gaps in the Indian innovation ecosystem lies between research outcomes and market adoption. Bridging this gap requires strong collaboration between academia, startups, and industry.

On 11th October 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the Industry Meet on Translational Research, organized by the Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation (CNDE), IIT Madras. The event brought together researchers, startups, and industry leaders from across India, all focused on translating deep research into real-world industrial applications.

Showcasing Innovation with Industry Relevance

A key highlight of the event was the Startup Showcase, where startups supported by CNDE presented their innovations to an audience of industry professionals and academicians. These were not conceptual ideas, but solutions grounded in rigorous research with clear industrial relevance.

The interactive stalls allowed participants to engage deeply with the technologies, understand their underlying science, and explore how they could be deployed in real-world scenarios. This format encouraged meaningful conversations around adoption, scalability, and commercialization.

What stood out was the strong emphasis on application-driven research. This is exactly where translational research plays a vital role. Research must move beyond papers and labs to solve real problems faced by industries.

Learning from CNDE’s Approach to Collaboration

I also had the opportunity to interact with Prof. Krishnan Balasubramanian, Faculty and Head of CNDE at IIT Madras. Our discussion provided valuable insights into how CNDE systematically enables industry–academia collaboration.

CNDE plays a crucial role in:

  • Connecting research-led startups with relevant industries
  • Supporting validation of technologies in industrial environments
  • Accelerating commercialization of deep-tech innovations
  • Ensuring research outcomes are aligned with real market needs

This structured approach significantly reduces the friction startups often face when moving from lab-scale validation to market readiness.

Why This Matters for Startups and Incubators

At SSN iFound, we strongly believe that the future of innovation lies in purpose-driven research translation. Deep-tech startups, in particular, need access to strong research ecosystems, industrial partners, and commercialization support.

Engaging with hubs like CNDE allows us to explore synergistic opportunities where:

  • Lab-scale research can evolve into market-ready products
  • Startups receive technical validation and industry exposure
  • Innovation is driven with precision, relevance, and impact

Such collaborations are essential if we want to build startups that are not only innovative, but also scalable and sustainable.

Closing Thoughts

Events like this reinforce the importance of building strong bridges between research institutions, incubators, and industry. When these ecosystems work together, innovation moves faster, risk reduces, and startups gain a clearer path to market.

Looking forward to continued engagement with research and innovation hubs like CNDE, IIT Madras, as we collectively work towards enabling startups to translate ideas into impactful solutions.
