From Solar Sparks to Startup Scale: 14 Years of Growth, Grit, and Giving Back

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Yesterday, a Facebook memory popped up reminding me of a defining moment from fourteen years ago, the initiation of the R&D process for Ulaginoli Energy Solutions. While my entrepreneurial journey actually began about three years prior, this milestone marked the start of designing and assembling our own branded solar products, setting the stage for many lessons learned ahead.

During this critical phase, I collaborated closely with my friends Dheepan Sundar and Tamilventhan, who were an invaluable part of the early R&D trials. Although they were not part of the company, I frequently consulted with them for their technical expertise and guidance, their advice helping navigate some of the trickier technical challenges.

Learning Through Trial, Error, and Experimentation

The early days were filled with uncertainty and learning on the ground. Our first prototype, a solar-powered garden light glowing softly on a breadboard, symbolized a small spark of possibility. But getting from concept to product was anything but smooth.

Later we started assembling and installing solar street lights, photovoltaic systems, traffic blinkers, etc. Installations demanded working long hours under the sun, managing a team of installers, and adapting solutions in real time. Sometimes, we did not immediately know how to fix a customer’s problem. We experimented, burnt our fingers, and got our hands literally dirty, figuring it out as we went along.

That process, messy, frustrating, and often humbling was an irreplaceable teacher. It grounded us in resilience and taught me that real learning often happens through mistakes and hands-on problem solving.

Building a Brand Meticulously

Our work extended far beyond the technology itself. We sourced solar PV panels, batteries, inverters, and components from OEMs, and partnered with local vendors for minor accessories. Every piece carried our own brand name, a mark of pride and responsibility.

We meticulously designed brand labels, packaging, user manuals, and documented sales and warranty processes. Each detail reinforced our commitment to quality and customer trust.

Early days were not perfect. We were grateful to customers who saw our potential and stood by us through gaps and hiccups, offering feedback that fueled our improvements. Their patience was a vital part of our growth story.

Paying It Forward: Enabling The Next Generation of Startups

Fast forward to today—as the head of incubation programs at SSN iFound, I carry those earliest lessons with me every day. Now, my work is to help startups progress through three critical stages:

  • From lab-scale prototype to market-ready product with expert technical mentoring
  • From raw startup to commercially sound business with structured business mentoring
  • From innovative idea to investment-ready model with dedicated investor connections and fundraising support

Key Lessons Learned That I Share with Founders

  1. Mistakes teach faster than success—embrace them as inevitable and valuable.
  2. Brand-building matters as much as product-building.
  3. Hands-on engagement reveals solutions no theory can.
  4. Customer loyalty is cultivated through transparency and continuous improvement.
  5. Leadership is a journey of ongoing growth, from founder to enabler.

Whether you are wiring your first solar circuit or leading an emerging startup today, know that every great journey begins with persistent experimentation, learning, and iteration. Small sparks have the power to light entire paths.

As we keep building and supporting founders, I am reminded that entrepreneurship is about communal growth, celebrating every lesson learned and every step forward.
